I'd vote for Tom D -- Dogbert to the rescue!
If this is a chronic problem, some mice will work without pads. I don't use a pad at home because I use a laser mouse. The downside is that there are now tiny colorless lines on my computer desk...

Go to control panel, Mouse and i dont know the submenu that you will get because mine is in spanish but it should have the word options, maybe the word pointer too. now there sould be a speed modifier, change it so its faster that way with less movement you move more, dont forget to apply. That should be useful with a small mouse pad or big mouse. luck!

Okay, you've got a tense situation here, so the most important thing is to be calm. Remember to talk softly to your mouse this whole time. Tell him that everything is going to be alright, he doesn't have to jump off into the unexplored regions of your desk. Tell him that you're going to slowly, carefully pick him up and set him back where it is safe, back to the center of your mouse pad. Then do just that. If your mouse cooperates, give him a pat on the back and treat him to a game of minesweeper.
