Saying "how do you do" meant that you were asking how a person "did" or fared, in his general health. "Goodbye" is an abbreviation of the saying "God by ye", meaning God be with you. I have never been able to find out what "hello" evolved from.

It is just a abbreviated term meaning "How are you doing". In many sections of the US, especially TEXAS, it is common for someone go greet you with a "Howdy Do". In New York a "How youse guys" is frequent. All are basically inquiring "How do you feel today". More friendly than just a cold Hello.

My friend, how do you do is the shortest way of saying, how are you doing or how are you faring or how are you feeling. I hope you see the point.

However, when you add what to the question, you are asking the process of doing some things.

Got the point?
