(1/3)x + (1/4)x + (1/5)x = 47
Multiply everything by 60
20x + 15x + 12x = 2820
47x = 2820
x = 60
(1/3)(60) = 20
(1/4)(60) = 15
(1/5)(60) = 12
ANS :
1st son = 20 ships
2nd son = 15 ships
3rd son = 12 ships

I don't think the answer 20, 15 12 is correct.
If son 1 gets 20 ships then this is not 1/3 of 47, and so the owner did not have (exactly) 47 ships.
If the owner has exactly 47 ships then he gives away 15 2/3, 11 3/4, 9 2/5, which is a total of 47/60 of his total of 47 ships.
He thus retains 13/60 * 47 ships for himself (just over 10).
But I don't know how you divide a ship!
But (Clinkit) why assume there are 60 ships? The question implies there are 47 ships!

The first son would get 16, the second son gets 12 and the third son gets 10 leaving 9 ships that go to no one

Round 47 up to 60, probably the nearest whole number 3, 5 and 4 divide into that's more than 47.
60/3= 20 for the first son.
60/4= 15 for the second son.
60/5= 12 for the third son.
20+15+12=47.

Michael P probably has the answer you are looking for.
But that is not a third, a quarter, and a fifth of the ships, because that would constitue giving out 78.333% of the ships . It is handing out ships in the ratio of a third to a quarter to a fifth, which is the ratio:
33.33.... : 25:20
which is equivalent to the ratio 20:15:12
And when you give out the ships like that, son 1 got 42.6%, son two got 31.9%, and son three got 25.5% of the ships

1/3+1/4+1/5 = 47/60
Let's assume there were 60 ships:
First son will get 1/3 * 60 = 20 ships
Second son gets 1/4 * 60 = 15 ship
Third son will get 1/5 * 60 = 12 ships
this adds up to exactly 47

You borrow 13 ships, you can even do this hypothetically, and that makes 60 ships. Then give the sons their share as above, making 20, 15 and 12 ships ... that makes 47 ships ... leaving the 13 you borrowed that go straight back to the owners ... and they never had to leave dock!
