It's red and it's a business expense so it's tax free. If you work in a factory that requires you to wear steal toed boots, then they are tax deductible. Farmers require diesel to do their job so it's tax deductible too. Being a farmer is like being a cop, a firefighter, or a teacher. It's a service job so the government cuts them more slack.
Also the ticket you get for putting farm diesel in your non farm truck is so severe that it isn't worth the risk. I think the fine is like $1,000. Their methods of detecting farm fuel in vehicles is getting more sophisticated so more people are getting caught.

Solvent Red 26, Solvent Red 164
Diesel fuel is very similar to heating oil which is used in central heating. In Europe, the United States and Canada, taxes on diesel fuel are higher than on heating oil due to the fuel tax, and in those areas, heating oil is marked with fuel dyes and trace chemicals to prevent and detect tax fraud. Similarly, "untaxed" diesel is available in the United States, which is available for use primarily in agricultural applications such as for tractor fuel. This untaxed diesel is also dyed red for identification purposes, and should a person be found to be using this untaxed diesel fuel for a typically taxed purpose (such as "over-the-road", or driving use), the user can be fined US$10,000.

It's red. The reason for the tax-free status is that ag diesel is primarily used off-road, the applications that use it on road pay the tax to help with road maintanence.
