If you want to work in corrections, then sociology is the way to go, but if you want to be a high school teacher, do education. It is difficult to get into the school system without an education degree, if you do something else, you will have to go back and get certified (meaning more school) before you can teach.
Really though if you want to be a police officer, it doesn't matter what you do, they just want a degree in something.
It is hard to get a job with a sociology degree anywhere but corrections unless you have an advanced degree (masters or PhD).

Psychology because the difference in psychology and sociology is that psychology deals more with individuals while sociology deals primarily with group behaviors. However, given their nature it's impossible for the two not to overlap in your studies and in the long run you'll be more employable and make more money with a degree in psychology than sociology.
This is off subject, but, it's awesome that you're 20 and you say that you need to mature. When I was 20 I was not mature enough to admit such a thing. I thought I knew everything. :)

I would go into psychology with the history of your family and your back ground, it could do you a lot of good in your work to understand why people may act the way they do. I love psychology there is a lot to learn and it helps you understand others better.
Just don't do what I did, and go around psychoanalyzing your family or friends from the words of Freud. They frown on that and it'll drive you crazy.
But please deside what it right for yourself, deep within you know the answer and you can find it. Dont let anyone push you into what you don't want because you will never be happy.

I have a degree in psychology and I'm working on a masters degree in business. Psychology is as good as the next degree when it comes to the average job.
If I could do it over again I would major in business ( finance )

You cannot do much with a bachelors degree in either of these fields. I would recommend that you take up something in a field which can produce fruit, that is, make money for you, so that you can live a decent life.

i think you need to sit down and think about what you really want to do. just remember to keep your options open. I'm sure you can incorporate sociology and psychology.
