# Keep your hamster's living quarters in a dimly lit area. Hamsters normally live underground, where it's darker. Try to mimic those conditions so that your hamster feels more at home. The size of the cage should be at least 20" x 16" and 10" high.
# Do not place the cage in direct sunlight or near a direct heating source.
# The area should have a temperature range between 65 and 80F, with babies doing best at 70 to 75F. The relative humidity should be between 40% and 79%.
# The cage should always have at least one side of the enclosure open for air circulation.
# Your hamster should always have access to water. Water should be provided in water bottles equipped with sipper tubes. The average hamster drinks approximately 10 milliliters (3.4 oz) of water per 100 grams (3.5 oz) of bodyweight, although this amount is only a fraction of the total amount of water in the bottle, the bottle should be emptied, cleaned and refilled with fresh water daily.

If your hamster has a heat stroke caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or some other direct heat source, the fur will be damp and the hamster will be unresponsive. Do this:
Remove the hamster from the heat, hold in hand and submerge body in cool water (not head), dry and rehydrate when hamster regains consciousness. Get to vet if no immediate recovery is seen.

You could freeze water bottles and put them in the cage. Wrap a dish towel around them to soak up the water. Watch out, they might chew on the plastic though. Another idea is keeping bricks, or pieces of slate or marble in the freezer and putting them in the cage with him one at a time. They can lay on it. I'd wrap something around that too, especially when it first comes out of the freezer. You could put their cage on some tile floor or the floor in the garage. It's usually cooler.
Blowing a fan on them only works if you either dampen the hamster or blow the fan across a big block of ice. Hamsters don't sweat. The reason humans feel cooled by a fan is the evaporation of sweat on our skin.
Good luck and stay cool yourself.
PS: You can find pieces of stone counter top or slate at home improvement stores or garden supply stores. Sometimes they have busted pieces they cannot sell and they would throw away. Ask if they mind you take them.

You can buy your hamster a little hut that he can go in. Make sure that he has plenty of fresh bedding to burrow under when it gets hot. Avoid sitting his cage in direct sunlight. Also, make sure he has a full bottle of fresh water several times a day. Hamsters can get something called "wet tail" if there is too much moisture and humidity in their cage,so you should refresh his bedding daily. They are prone to colds and respiratory illnesses so don't put him near any drafty areas like too close to an open window. Make sure you handle him daily and keep him dry and well fed and he should be fine!
