It was a complete hoax. Richie DeFeo was a murdering punk druggie with a dysfunctional family and bastard father. The Lutz's, who moved in and wrote the book, etc. were Richie's friends. There was no priest ever involved, no bleeding walls, nothing, and none of the other neighbors have ever seen or heard anything but annoying tourists. The people who bought the place after the Lutz family skipped have been there ever since with no problems.

It was a total hoax. The Lutz family were in debt to their eye balls and concocted the story to get out from under. They admitted the whole thing.

Yup.
It has been proved to be a fake. Contrary to 'urban legend' the family was not haunted and admitted to it. Now there are conspiracy theories about why they are 'pressured' into denying the whole thing.
