If the ultrasound comes out normal, will my chances of having a baby with down's syndrome be the same as if the test was negative?

It was the quadruple screen that came back positive.

There are many, many false positives with the quad screen. A level 2 ultrasound may shed some light, but if you want to be 100% sure, you may want to ask your doctor about having an amniocentesis. I have literally seen hundreds of + for downs on quad screens through the years, and the rare exception is actually seeing a downs baby result. Don't over worry; odds are everything is OK. Best of luck to you.

Well, if you tested positive for the AFP4 screening....that means there's a chance of you having a baby with Down syndrome, trisomy 18 or an open neural tube defect. However; this screening MOST OF THE TIME gives "false positive." This happened to me a week ago so I know exactly how you feel (I'm about 20 weeks now). So basically they'll do a level 2 ultrasound on you which is a VERY detailed ultrasound. You can see your baby's spine, heart, brain.....everything. Hopefully they don't find anything in that ultrasound.....if they do they will probably do a amniocentesis on you. That is when they draw amniotic fluid from you and test it to see if anything is really wrong with the baby (& this test never lies). My level 2 ultrasound was the day before yesterday and thank God everything was perfect. My test came out positive because my AFP levels were higher than average. I honestly hope everything goes fine with you...let us know what happens.

now it all depends on the tests. If it was the triple screen or a screening for down's, and it came back as a chance of your baby having down's then you really need to wait until the level 2 u/s and possible have an amnio. But if it is an amnio that said positive for down's then the amnio is fool proof, it goes off of the amniotic fluid which have the baby's genes in it. I had a possible positive with a screening, then went on to have the level 2 u/s and amnio together and after all the results were back everything was genetically normal. So, really an amnio may be your 100%way of knowing.

If you are saying that your baby tested positive for risk on an AFP, or alpha feta protein test, it is important that you know there is a very high margin of error on this test, so high that many doctors do not even recommend taking it. If your level ll ultrasound reveals no abnormalities, (there will be specifics they will be looking for), it is highly unlikely that your baby has Down's Syndrome. It depends on the test that was done. If it was an amniocentesis, the outlook may not be as bright. Good luck and congratulations, regardless of the result! I had an abnormal test (afp) myself with my first child, and she was completely healthy, and is now 9!

many times the US is not completely accurate and the baby is normal. When it is accurate, often the child can be functional if the parents are willing to hard on their child, at times the level of mental retardation is higher and the child needs assistance for life. One fact is that most parents of down's syndrome children find that the love from that child fills their life to overflowing. Have faith.

As many before me said, this test is often in accurate. We never had the first test done, especially when the doctor told us that the results were less than 48% accurate. Study up on downs and know that God will only give you what you can handle.

Your doctor can tell you better than any one else, but I have heard that those tests aren't the most accurate so good luck with the level 2.
