It seems every time I give a gift to one of my Asian friends, I get something in return--something rather nice. It doesn't matter if there's an occasion for gift giving or not. I'm not Asian--so if someone who's part of the Asian community could help me understand... Do I need to give something back in return for the return present?

Gift-giving is a strong part of Asian culture. You don't need to give a gift for a return gift.

That's how we show friendship. And no you don't have to reciprocate. By giving something to someone is showing that person you like them and want to be friends. It's like giving that person a part of our heart through a gift. I hope that makes sense.

You don't need to give anything in return. Because us asian are good people. We are known for kindness.

I find this predicament your in unexplicably hilarious. And I'm wishing I had some Asian friends right about now. It's probably not just asian though, ever think they're just really cool friends, or they're moms are really strict?

im not asian but if you give back a gift to them for giving you a gift that you gave them, it will never stop and you will be giving until you die.

No, it is just what we do. If someone shows us kindness we show it back in return.
