This might sound like a silly question, and my guess is that it is in fact fine to visit the city. But I have read that there is still some lingering radiation in the area. In which case, is it enough to affect visitors in any significant way? Of course, the people who lived through the atomic bomb still live with the effects of radiation... but this is because of their initial exposure to it and exposure close to the period and hypocentre following the explosion right? And not necessarily due to the radiation, if any, that still lingers in the area?

Merci d'avance for your answers.

The nuke exploded in the air, 2,000 feet above the city. All radioactive substance is assumed to be reacted.
So, don't worry.

It is very different from the Chernobyl, Ukraine (ex-Soviet).
The Chernobyl, there radioactive substance exists still inside. That is why people had to evacuate, and the government had shut it up and covered the facility with plumbum and concrete.

Don't worry.

It's safe.
You know Hiroshima is big city, so many people is livint there.
Many people come to Hiroshima to know about atomic bomb.
I also has visited there once.

If you are interested in Hiroshima and radiation, I hope you know misery of the war and atomic bomb.
We have to hand down the misery generation to generation.

Background radiation in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are higher than normal but both within acceptable limits. If it weren't I don't think several million Japanese would be living in either of these cities.

The explosion was an air burst ,not a ground explosion .The purpose of that was to kill more people.
The ground wasn't contaminated so its safe.

I've been to Hiroshima three times and Nagasaki once. I might be exposed to enough radiation to cause cancer...(>_<)

But I've never heard of that. I think it's far less than that of one X-ray exam, if any.(^_^)

There is no exposure. Trust me. I've been there before and If I knew their was a risk for potential exposure, I wouldn't have gone there.

I don't think so; that was--what, 61 years ago? People live there, you know.

I think you can get more radiation living under power lines or endlessly surfing on the Internet. =)
