These pageants supposedly represent the cream of the crop. They're supposed to be roll models, aren't they? But it's all about appearances. If it wasn't about physical looks we'd have disabled women and large women and women with bad hair but great brains, and women with big butts and great talent as roll models. No matter how smart you are, if you don't look "right" you're not a contender are you? By saying that this is the "ideal woman" they've written off most of us haven't they? It's just one more way to make girls out there more interested in their bra size than what's in their heads and hearts. It sells shampoo, deodorant and boob jobs, so they'll be around forever.

They're a kind of sport, like baseball or tap dancing, which is to say, an activity that some enjoy participating in and others don't. If entering a beauty pageant is your idea of fun, go for it; if not, then do something else. You might win scholarships or other prizes, or you might just come away with some entertaining stories to tell, but it's not going to hurt you. The actress Fannie Flagg started out in beauty pageants and has some hilarious tales to tell. She insists she would have been Miss Georgia if she hadn't been sitting on a wicker chair while waiting for the swimsuit competition.

This is a more complex issue than one would assume at first glance. The initial reaction is yes they help to perpetuate the belief that women are just objects, but there are different contexts. For instance, last year in Toronto much was made of a pageant for the local Arab women and how many of these women viewed this event as a way to assert their independence and empower (god I hate that word!) themselves. So, I would say that the context has to be examined and the the women have to judge that for themselves, and having made a choice I think they should be supported, no matter what the choice is. This way, they are making adult conscious decisions about their social interactions, and that, it would seem to me, would go a long way to counter any concept of the women simply acting as objects. After all, just as objectionable as the objectification of women is the infantilisation of women. In other words implying that women are dupes who are unwittingly exploited is just as bad as seeing them as objects. Women are adults, they can decide, and know the difference.

Hmmm....the thing i find interestin about beauty pageants is that, the winning is only partially based on actual physical beauty. The rest is rated on talent, skill, intelligence, etc. So...to be honest with you, i really dont understand why its called a "beauty pageant" at all...cuz it sounds to me, more like "whos got the coolest of everything" contest. And ok, so beauty does come alot from the personality of a person, their demeanure, they way the smile, etc, i totally agree with all of that, but if thats what we are admittin to by havin the talent contest and stuff in these pageants.....that you know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that there is much more to it than just a pretty face and a nice figure...then i think thats rather unfair for just 5 or 6 ppl (the judges) to decide who the "most beautiful woman" in the world is, cuz it would just be based on their opinions. And as far as beauty pageants perpetuating the objectification of women....well, imma a girl so i dunno if im being biased when i say this, but yeah sometimes i do think that that things like beauty pageants, and certain music videos perpetuate the objectification of women...but then again, there are beauty pageants for guys too, right? (im sorry, im dunno what they are called. hehe. :) ) But i guess, in the end, its really mostly a matter of how you wish to see it. Im not sure if that makes any sense. lol. But i hope it does. :)

absolutely everyone likes to make certain perfect issues and that i imagine attractiveness Pageants works like the Singapore Idol, project superstar and so on...salary are continuously the major situation through Organisers (from commercials air-time and so on minus the the sms-ing). If there is call for, there'll be furnish. attractiveness is subjective and that i think that that is properly quite shallow to ought to carry such pageants to guage women persons, their intelligence, attractiveness, wits and so on at the same time as in the first position, those might want to no longer be judged. The "gruesome" ones get rejected and the "perfect" ones get to the finals. and then those women persons commence to seem in public with prepared speech which in a fashion make certain their "intelligence". that is hence frivolous. perfect me if i'm incorrect as i have by no skill been element of BPs. i think maximum of those women persons want to be publicly universal as a attractiveness Queen or contestant, be it their target as a stepping stone to repute, vainity or in the different case, the superb is to be in the limelight. Afterall, which women persons reject the conception of being labelled a attractiveness Queen? yet we gained't deny the boldness advance and studies of the competition which have made absolutely everyone a more desirable helpful individual in a fashion or so. even with the undeniable fact that, I strongly believe that attractiveness Pageants are unimportant to society yet per chance a turning factor for some persons.

i think they are. i think that beauty pageants are just stages to show off what people want in women and 90% of that is looks. they do the evening gown, bikini, and talent competition for the crowd and all the personality stuff behind closed doors to give the impression that the looks are better and women are supposed to be that way. they make the girls look like living dolls with no personality, dreams, aspirations, or a real shred of humanity. i think they're stupid and i would never allow my daughters to compete in them b/c i don't want them to get the perception that how they look to judges is all that matters.
on the flip side, i believe that looks are important to an extent. people should at least try to take care of themselves. but i don't think it should be put on a pedestol and preached as what people should be w/o giving credit to the fact that beauty gets boring when there's no personality to keep one interested.

yes they do . they are filled with women who think that they are better , prettier , smarter and more deserving of the title than the other girls . they could put on a big smile and a fake congratulations to the winner , but as soon as they are backstage , that's where the back stabbing , withchiness and true colors come out . I did hair and make -up for 1000's of beauty pageants and I've seen it all .and it's worse when they are little kids , the parents are obsessed , where as the kids don't really care , all they are are their parents little dolls . If not they get hammered.

Yes, they do. They are initially fun, in my youth I enjoyed the competition, it was exciting.......but now, I see that it was truly damaging to my spirit, to my self esteem, to my self worth, I don't have a daughter, but if I ever do, I will never, ever, put her in a pageant. I am still a very prissy, girly kinda person and I would be probably hard pressed not to pass some of those traits on to a daughter, but at the same time, I would be really firm in teaching her about her value and worth as a human being, something she wouldn't learn anything about in a pageant.

beauty pagents shows what a real women should be ,independent ,free, classy, intelligent, graceful, feminine ,modest, mature ,stylish, beautiful and pretty. that is the essence of bieng a women than those degrading ,slutty or whorees girls we see a lot in porno site okay added impormation beauty pageant does not judge by it looks alone. u must be intelligent or smart to impress the judge i mean beauty is just 40 percent of the vote while intelligent, talent and personality has a lot of vote let say 90 percent by the judges okay so in other words beauty and brains is exactly what a beauty contest is okay anyway i have seen ur picture maybe u can pass for a beauty contestant so join in and bieng adored by a lot of guys in the world do u like that thanks .

I believe it does. Not only does it promote the idea that a woman's value lies solely in her appearance, it also causes women to compete in an unhealthy way.
