I'm just watching 8 Mile on the TV, and I really feel as if we are missing out. LOL... no seriously how do these trailers parks work?. Do people buy or rent the trailers... I thought there was social housing in the USA?

I know we have trailer places but they really are not prevalent in the UK at all. For example there is one about 4 miles from where I live and senior citizens live there so it's not like the sort of trailer parks I see on TV.

i know there are gypsy sites in the UK but these tend to be people who don't necessarily stay in one place particularly if they are evicted off the land which happens quite a lot.

Yes, there is social housing in the USA. People usually (not always) purchase the trailer at a dealership. Yeah, just like a car dealership. They're REALLY cheap (and fall apart too!). Then, you rent a lot of land to put it on, usually in a trailer park. The dealership moves your trailer to that lot of land and hooks up the utilities (but YOU pay for it). Quite frankly, having lived in a trailer, I am MUCH happier in an apartment. The people are just better people in apartment housing. Also, apartments can be just as cheap as a trailer (or cheaper).

We do sort of but houses not trailers - we call them council estates. You get the same sort of people in trailers in Amercia as you do in Council Estates over here in the UK. Poor white trash - or Chavs as we Brits call them.
Poor families in the USA live in trailers, I beleive because there is less affordable housing and they don't have local councils building estates on which to house them. Over here if you need low cost housing you'd aply for a council house or a housing association house.
So we don't really need trailer parks.
America has, I think, Housing Projects but from the films I've seen they tend to be more for black families and there is lots of crime and violence on them.
EDIT: Kermit - the caravan site in "Snatch" was a Pikey (Irish Gypsy) site, a totally different thing. Gypsies move around with their caravans. Its mainly council estates where the poor ("white trash") chavs live. But they are houses and flats not trailers.

If you are interested in trailer parks, you've got to check out a Canadian TV show called "The Trailer Park Boys". It's an outrageous and awful collection of losers, but very funny. Available on:

That would spoil the view of our countryside and go against planning permission! with the quality of new homes so low though, I don't see there is that much difference between a trailer and a new house.

cos it would be full of old slappers from Chadwell and Tilbury asking for business , And Thurrock council asking for "Back handers" too keep the place open , then the pikes would move in with there crap .. Thats way we dont have trailer parks due to the trash that would come with it... Dont you just love the UK...?
