if it is a floppy drive you may need to clean it or replace it, thy are cheap and easy to change. or the disk is no good.
if it is a CD or DVD drive you may need to clean it or clean the disk, or the disk may have to many scratches on it to read.
or you may have added a new device that is in conflict with the drive, if so you will need to change a few setting.

More then likely it's not your disk drive at all. I've had the same problems, honestly with 10 page term papers not being read by the drive, it turns out its the disks. Learn from me cheap floppies are like taking your chance with Russian Roulett when it comes to college and important documents!

Try another disk if that works the disk is bad if that does not work it could be the drive needs cleaning or replaced.

It is surely bad. You can buy one for about $14 or less if you look. I assume you are talking about a 1.44 floppy drive. They are easy to remove. In an extreme case, you may have a dirty drive. A short toot of compressed air will sometimes make it work. Also, the drive seating may be worn. When you insert a 1.44 Floppy, there is a distinct "click" so it is seated right. I have a computer on my network that you have to hold your mouth just right to get the drive to go. If you are talking about anything else (CD, ZIP, etc) your drive is bad - end of story - go buy anther.

That could be a millions things. Um, let me try to give you a start. Well, does it read other disks or is it just this disc? the disc could be faulty.

if it is cd drive tahn you need to clean it with cleaning cd.
