Emo referring to music is short for emotive which first appeared I think in the late 80's maybe the 90's. Emo music back then isn't like the current "emo" music which is overly emotional and has spawned a subculture of kids which call themselves emo. Some people try to say it is a type of punk music, but I don't see any similarity in message or style of music.

Emo is a genre of music. It derived in the 80s, I believe, and back then it was emotive/emotional hardcore. In time it has changed, though, thanks to bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and whatnot, so now emo is more calm, soothing music with no screaming. Some of it is actually quite beautiful, check out Elliott (False Cathedrals is my favorite album ever) and the December Drive. Amazing bands.
It has changed recently, also, thanks to 12/13 year old little kids who think Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy are emo (they are not, by the way). Stupid, ignorant kids. Sigh.
But emo is a genre of music. It is also short for "emotional", but it's mainly a genre of music.
It's also a fad/fashion statement. The goal of every male "emo" kid is to look as feminine as possible. They wear make up, nail polish, female clothing (preferably black and pink and way too tight), and have extremely fashionable black straight hair. They all look the same. The females, well, they're more masculine than the males, I'll leave it at that.
And the goal of every emo kid (they call themselves "emos" but I hate that term so I wont use it) is to look as depressed/miserable as possible and to hate their lives. Most of them even go as far as cutting themselves because their lives are so miserable and full of pain that they cant handle it, so they cut themselves to "numb" the "emotional pain."
It's all f-ing stupid, if you ask me.

Yeah, it means "Emotional". Basically it's a bunch of weakling kids, with no individuality whatsoever, who want to be goth but don't have the guts to really be goth.

emo - short for emotional.. it is just a person who is very depressed and stays very low and are rather pessemistic.. as far as i'm aware.
