What is wrong with the battery? won't charge? won't hold charge? What type of battery?(Li-Ion, Ni-Mh ect)

A software error shouldn't be able to naff the batt...

The only way to screw the battery(apart from its 'natural' lifespan of course) would be over/undercharging, over a long period of time. You should also periodically drain the battery.

I gots a 10 yr old tosh lappy, battery won't last 45min without mains(it was like that when i got it, person i got it off used it like a desktop system ie: plugged in and charging 24/7)... Its more economical to buy another laptop than a new battery(a decent one ie: 8hrs +) i'm afraid. you could try a second hand one, but life expectancy of such an item would be 'unreliable'
New batts costing upwards of £30 (Approx $57 USD)
