Over 10 years ago, my husband and I were mistaken for Europeans on a street in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. I took it as a compliment. (We're US citizens.) We're not flashy people. Oh, and I had my hair up.

Oh, and I was mistaken once for a Brazilian. I was in Japan at the time. The women who thought I was Brazilian were Brazilians themselves.

I think people see you how they want to see you. (Someone should do a study on this.) Maybe a smiling, friendly person is more likely to be identified and claimed by other racial groups?

PS I'm Caucasian, and my eyes are hazel.

I have a little bit of everything mixed up in me, German, Mexican, Phillipino, Spanish, Native American, pretty much you name it it's in me! Only thing I can think of was my ancestors were very friendly ;) I have dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes and I've been mistaken for just about every ethnic group, my parents are from Texas and I classify myself as hispanic. Every now and then in my family a blonde hair, blue eyed child pops up :) As a matter of fact my daughter just had a daughter herself who has blonde hair, blue eyes and very fair skin :) I spent some time in England this past year and because of the way I talked I was often asked if I was from Canada so I've been mistaken for just about everything now :)

Mexicans, Iranians, Lebanese, Native Americans and Jews often think that I am one of them. Weirdest of all was when a girl in college thought I was from India. Obviously, I am not a blonde with pale skin and blue eyes.

I've gotten Spanish, Arab, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, and Swedish.

Of course those people were all blind, and were merely feeling my face out. But still.
