I have Windows XP Professional. My computer had a virus in April of this year. Luckily, that was taken care of, but now everytime I turn on the computer a blue screen pops up. The blue screen said Chkdsk. It said that the computer was checking a disk for any problems. I have a chance to press any key on the keyboard to stop it, and I did let it check it. A lot of things work fine on my computer, but when I try to Defragment something it says: "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: C:
Please run Chkdsk /f." So i go to the command prompt, and type in chkdsk /f, and it says: "THE TYPE OF FILE SYSTEM IS NTFS. CANNOT LOCK CURRENT DRIVE. CHKDSK CANNOT RUN BECAUSE THE VOLUME IS IN USE BY ANOTHER PROCESS. WOULD YOU LIKE THIS VOLUME TO BE CHECK THE NEXT TIME THE SYSTEM RESTARTS?" I do not have by the way, a Microsoft XP CD. Please, help me with this. I am looking for the best answer ever, step by step! PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME TO GO TO A COMPUTER WORKSHO

You might want to try booting into "Safe Mode" by tapping the F8 key as the pc starts up. Choose "Command Prompt", and once you've got that window, then type in CHKDSK /F after the prompt. That should correct the problem. Then exit from that mode, reboot, and hopefully your "glitch" will be gone. Good luck.

The problem is actually most likely with shutdown, not startup.

When a Windows PC has not been shut down properly, it automatically runs CheckDisk to verify that the harddrive heads didn't crash into the disc & ruin your data.

How have you been shutting down your computer? Be sure to use Start > Shut Down > Shut Down > OK.

Also, under Desktop > Alt-double-click My Computer > Hardware > Device Manager > Computer, does it say ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)?

Finally, you should try downloading the latest BIOS from your computer manufacturor's website.
