I wouldn't be eligible for a penny from the welfare state, despite all the income tax and national insurance I've payed in over 20 years of self-employment. I certainly wouldn't get benefit anywhere near my earnings, but I appreciate what you are saying regarding those on lower wages and part-time jobs. The solution is to tax them less - make it very worthwhile to be working, and limit the time benefit is paid out. And child benefit? How does it benefit society that my neighbours have kids? I have to pay for their education and health-care until they start paying taxes, when they're about twenty-two, if they go to university! Children should be something parents have to save money to afford to have, not the burden of those of us who haven't chosen to breed.

I'm on the social and I can tell you I don't get as much as I would if I was working.
I haven't been able to work for over 4 years now due to illness (mental health problems) and I have to scrape by on what I get from the government. When I was working I could afford to run a car and go food shopping without thinking about the prices of things. Now I cant even afford bus fare to get to the shops and have to look at every price ticket before I put it in my basket. I can only spend £10 a week on food.
So if I were you I wouldn't go on the social!!!!!

Two reasons:
1. Pride
2. Living off social welfare programs creates a dependency on the state. That dependency leads to the power of the state superseding the power of the people, as the people now are, for all intents and purposes, enslaved to the state. It is better to live with great effort than to be nothing more than cattle.

Because you really can't. Social security payments are based on your payments which are a percentage of your income until you reach the maximum payment. You also have to be 62 years old now to collect and the age is going up each year. I am guessing it will be a while before you are old enough so you need to work in between to qualify.

Social only gave me about £56 per week - at work I am picking up 9x that amount - If I could pick up the same without working I would, I could find something to do all day (Play music, sport, computer games, go out, etc)...

For a lot of people it's financially better to be in work, you get much more money and the potential to climb the ladder to earn even more, while you're on the dole your pittance of an income will only change when the government says so, and it's not guaranteed to go upwards either.
I agree it's too easy to get benefits, there should be less of them to provide an incentive to people who work the system to get off it.

It should never be advantageous the claim benefits rather than earn your living. The only exception would be those who are unable to work for whatever reason, they should be supported.
You should work as long as you are able for your own self respect, to have a sense of acheivement and contribute to society.

think that its a case of self esteem, [ ha ha ], why work when you get more on the social. This topic pees me off, knowing that we both work hard [ no mortgage ] having paid it off, and yet people brag about working whilst claiming benefits, dont know why i bother working !!

You may have more cash , but you don't have more pride. Benefits in my opinion should be for the needy, not people that can't be bothered to get off their backsides or people that won't to bring child after child into the world and expect the taxpayer to support them.
