Today, I attended a soccer game for my 7 years old son.
His father (my ex) never saw him play this season and he decided to come and spend the day with us on the field.

Once there, I was chatting a little (20% of the time), cheering much (80%) with the mothers of the other players (I saw them twice a week, every week during summer).

After I was done talking with others, my ex politely told me that I was making my son sad when I was not watching him play.

I asked my son if he was sad when I was not watching and he did not notice, he was having fun. Games were for fun... nothing competitive.

What do you think? Should I take his advice and ignore others when my son is on the field playing any sports?

Just keep an eye on him while you're chatting with the other mothers. If you notice him looking at you, then you'll be the first to wave.

Just the fact that you're there probably means alot to your son! Some parents "never" show up at anything their kids are involved in!The little guy said he was having "fun" and wasn't watching if you were watching him or not but that's why you"re there right? What if he made a greeat play and you "missed" it and he said , Hey mom did you see that? You said you were watching 80% of the time, that's great because I bet half the other parents weren't watching their kids either! It becomes a "socializing" time instead of "game" time! Try to keep your eyes on your son while "he's" playing! If someone wants to talk with you just say ,I'm sorry, I'll talk to you later my son is playing and I want to watch! Maybe they'll get the hint and watch their kid too!

I don't think your son was sad, I think your ex was making a judgment about you. If you're not hearing anything negative on the issue from your son, just go about your business and don't change a thing based on your ex's opinion. He is trying to manipulate you emotionally through your son. Don't allow it.

Your doing great if that's the way it is. Tell your ex to butt out of your business and watch his son's game himself. If he was so into his son and his game how did he know what you were doing anyway?!
Remember...It's none of his business what you do anymore. If he will spend his time with his son like he should he won't have time to care what you are doing.

I think you handled yourself very well and should continue in the same way. You WERE watching him play and were cheering as well. That you were able to converse with friends you met at his games keeps you in touch with other parents and establishes a good social contact for you. Keep it up!!

Good luck!!

GOOD LORD WOMAN!!! Can you walk and chew gum at the same time. You don't always have to make eye contact with the person you're talking to and what does your ex know anyway (other than how to push your buttons?)

If it didn't bother your son, who cares what your ex thinks? When he divorced you he gave up his right to intervene in your life unasked. As long as your son's happy, your presence is giving him the support that he needs. Your ex can take a flying leap.

You cheered and talked ...you broke it down... 80% and your son was cool. Sounds like your ex was just jealous. Forget him.

As long as you notice when he makes a good play and cheer for him then it's fine to chat w/ other moms.
