I have Windows XP Professional. My computer had a virus in April of this year. Luckily, that was tooken care of, but now everytime I turn on the computer a blue screen pops up. The blue screen said Chkdsk. It said that the computer was checking a disk for any problems. I have a chance to press any key on the keyboard to stop it. A lot of things work fine on my computer, but when I try to Defragment something it says: "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: C:
Please run Chkdsk /f." So i go to the command prompt, and type in chkdsk /f, and it says: "THE TYPE OF FILE SYSTEM IS NTFS. CANNOT LOCK CURRENT DRIVE. CHKDSK CANNOT RUN BECAUSE THE VOLUME IS IN USE BY ANOTHER PROCESS. WOULD YOU LIKE THIS VOLUME TO BE CHECK THE NEXT TIME THE SYSTEM RESTARTS?" I do not have by the way, a Microsoft XP CD. Please, help me with this. I am looking for the best answer ever, step by step! PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME TO GO TO A COMPUTER WORKSHOP

go to: www.protonic.com - or - http://www.allexperts.com/ and state your problem but include the make of your computer. You will get an answer from an expert (free).
I have many tech contacts from different makers of computers, if you want to send me a message stating the brand of your computer I may be able to help in other ways.

Good Luck

You have to let your computer complete the system check disk that it's trying to do every time you restart it. Let the chkdsk run completely, it will take a while but you have to let it do it and not stop it so it will complete the operation. If not, it will continue to try to run the chkdsk every time to restart.

Please, shut it down and let it run the complete chkdsk before doing anything else, don't touch any key while it's doing it, I know it will take some time, but you'll see the progress in your screen, let it be and next time you'll be able to defrag it and it will be free of errors.

Try it, and good luck!

Are you sure you are shutting down properly? Always go to
start--shut down. Or ctrl, alt, delete for restart.
