I see this bee mostly at night and they like to get up into my porch light. I have looked around the yard and found no nest. One of these bees stung my sister several nights ago for no apparent reason. They make a very loud buzzing sound.

It probably won't be a bumble bee...bumble bees are black with one yellow stripe. Mostly, they just go about collecting pollen. I hate bees, and I've stood several times and watched (at a close range) a bumble bee go about it's work. They don't (usually) bother people, althought here are exception.

You said it's lartge, so I'd say it could be a wasp or a hornet. Either of those are large are will go after humans if they get too close. They're also the most dangerous and hurtful kind, from what I understand.

It could have also been a large yellowjacket, but maybe not.

If you got a good look at the bee, do a Yahoo! image search for each of these kind of bees. That'll help you figure out which one was the culprit.

I've got the same problem. Someone said maybe a Japanese bee. I'm worried because my grand daughter is severly allergic to bee stings so we keep her away. We do see them mostly at night but I did see 2 during the day. Until I find the nest I turn off my porch light and turn on the bug zapper, it goes for 5 mins when they get in there.

Except for the stinging they sound like cicada-killers. Especially the part about coming to the light in the evening. I've never know one to sting -though they are certainly scary and where kids are around I've always sprayed to try to get rid of them ( the insects , not the kids) just in case. If they are in fact cicada killers the nests will be in the ground somewhere , especially bare dirt areas or expansion joints in concrete slabs.

It could be a carpenter bee. They are large and make holes in wood. I've had some in the overhang on my patio.
