If we define sound/noise as that which is perceived/heard then the answer is no, despite the production of a sound wave. However, if we are prepared to accept that an unheard sound wave is still noise then the answer is yes.

Let's say I live in a soundproof cabin in the wood where the tree is falling. I hear it beginning to fall but quickly close my door so that I can hear nothing but then change my mind and open it again to hear the noisy conclusion of the tree falling. Is the answer to the question then yes, no, yes?

Tim M,

If you're wondering about the nature and validty of such things as induction and a priori knowledge, then read chapters 9 & 10 of 'The Problems of Philosphy' by Russell.

Otherwise, get some original material or answering the following:

I guess you mean since nobody is their to tell or hear their is no noise, but you forget the energy caused throw this action which Eco's and the noise reaches ears, it is very easy to use the imagination and find out that we don't have to be their.

yes it does and if you want to go the logic way that u you are not there to hear it then my argument is did it even fall? cos if you are not there to see it fall I doubt it even fell and if it fell it made noise!

Of course it does, we don't create the sound itself, the falling tree does.

Besides, there are other trees to hear it. :)

Of course it does. It's pretty arrogant of us to think the laws of physics brake down when we're not around.

No, it does not make a sound. It will send out sound waves but they will not turn into actual sound until they hit your ear drums and your brain proccesses it.
