I think it is an instinctive reaction, but serves to scan for any other
animals in the area, outdoors. (such as a predator or prey). I find this behavior to be very interesting to watch.

My father used to joke that our old dog was so dumb she had to circle three times and ask for directions to find the place to sleep. But in all honesty I would think that they like to turn circles so that they can get comfortable, just like a human might puff up their pillows or adjust their blankets before falling asleep.

It's ingrained in their genes so deeply they do it automatically. When wild dogs, coyotes, wolves bed down for the night, they walk around in circles, to mash down grass and weeds to make a place to sleep.

they inharate that from thier ancesters the wild dogs who used to sleep in tall grass and they turned circles to mat down the grass for a comfortable and insulated bed,

I don't know but I do the same thing myself and I'm a human, oh wait I'm a man so that makes me a dog. Darn I was so close to being considered human again.

Same reason I fluff and whack my downe pillow a few times....
to get comfy. Maybe it's kinda like when it's colder out and you get into bed and you say Burrr! so you move yer legs around really fast in hope to heat up the sheets. I don't know....

In the wild, they circle to see whether or not there is any thing unendurable for them to sleep on. they have resumed this habbit even when the hardest thing they sleep on is the couch

Maybe they are superstitious and think that by turning circles they can ward off bad dreams.
