Wikipedia says there's no one single inventor to credit.
In the USA, it's common to refer to Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor. His patent was granted in March of 1876.

Look it up on the internet for heavens sake!!!! Alexander Graham Bell. Though there were other people working on a telephone, he is the one considered the father of it. Thomas Edison also worked on them too. He was considered the father of electric companies.
