If you have to ask yourself this question when doing online business, I would steer clear.
Did you happen to get an email requesting unsolicited information? If so, RUN!!

Most likely it is not a 'real' company - why would they use a free gmail account for their business correspondence?

There's no way to verify ANYTHING from an email address, particularly the free ones. Anyone can create an account, and use any available user name.
