with so many college and high school teams using one of their best athletes at qb and utilizing the option within that spread, will the nfl ever adapt to the dual-threat qb (i.e. the titans incorporating more shotgun spread in preseason with young)? Is this an evolution of football or is it a passing fad like the run & shoot and 46 defense?

im not talking about the traditional option im talking about The spread option -- using three or more receivers to spread the opposing defense, a hybrid of the option offense and the spread offense. Option offenses force teams to load up with players to stop the run. Spread offenses spread the field so defenses have to defend the pass primarily. But the spread option makes coordinators try to defend the option and the pass. (Alex Smith at Utah and V. Young at Texas)

the fundamental problem with the Option is speed on defense. In college and hs, fast defensive ends and linebackers are hit and miss. But in the pros, everybody is faster, stronger and surer tacklers. Although college football is starting to get into that mode as well. Notice all the historical teams that ran the option, Nebraska and Notre Dame are the most prestigous, have gone to a West Coast style of offense, neutralizing defensive speed
I also agree that it puts the money man (QB) at risk to much.

Everything in football is an evolution; even "passing fads" like the R & S offense Moon ran so well contributed some element to today's offenses.

The option is a hard sell in the NFL because it puts the QB at (greater) risk on every play and the speed and recognition of defenses is at a level much higher than even a college like the U could aspire to.

Will we see some version of it someday? I'd love to. I'd love to see a team use a shotgun formation with 1 "pure passer" QB and 1 "Slash" QB both back there at the same time!

not posiblle for the nfl becuase the defensive ends are way to fast for option game, plus only the elite make it to the nfl.
