More intelligent programming - a game that can adjust to the user's level of skill on the fly. Keep it challenging without being impossible to beat.
More variety for accomplishing the end goals. There are usually two or three in better games, but inevitably you need to shoot something or have ONE particular skill/item/whatever. The real world doesn't limit people like that - if you want to do something there should be far more intelligence behind the scenes to allow for original ideas.
Graphics that react to realistic lighting and are timed in games to give you the same impact as though you have been in the game for a realistic amount of time. If you are playing a game for four hours, the sunlight should change accordingly - and if you come back to it later, the game should react as though it's "world" has been going on without you. For this you need save points that act as "safe spots".
Immersing plots - the real fun of games it a story that you take part in and can change the outcome of, not just tag along for the ride.

Eventually, the graphics will be just about as lifelike as they can get. At that point, the creators will have no choice but to improve game play. You'll have the awesome graphics of the future, with the great game play of original Nintendo games.

Who knows, the gaming market at the moment is in crisis at the moment. Piracy is hurting sales, online hackers/cheaters are causing huge problems too.
Any games in the future will be heavily protected from cheats, more realistic maybe even true virtual reality.

Implant a socket in your head connected to the brains inputs and outputs.
Plug in the console to the socket
The console sends signals that replace the inputs of the eyes, ears, nose, skin, nerves; and the outputs of you mouth, nose, muscle nerves.
To another person, you'd look like a paralyzed guy, but you would be somewhere else. Hehehe
Sort of like the matrix, i guess.

Video games will literally be an immerse experience wherein every sensation will be felt, seen, and heard. For example, getting hit will produce the likened sensation...running will cause you to sweat and tire, etc. etc.
