By the time your baby is six months of age and you are starting to introduce solids, you may be thinking about the type of milk which will best suit you and your baby.

A baby who is enjoying infant formula at six months can continue to use it up to and beyond one year of age. The suggested minimum is 500-600mls (about a pint) a day of infant formula or follow-on formula, up to one year of age. After this time a minimum of 350mls/ 12oz milk (breast, formula or cows' milk) is suggested.

If you have been breastfeeding you may want to continue with this for as long as you both wish. Your baby will continue to enjoy the health benefits that breastmilk confers. Even if you and your baby continue to enjoy breastfeeding you may want to consider introducing a soft spout or lidded beaker containing cooled, boiled water before one year.

A baby who is a reluctant milk drinker needs to have calcium from other sources. This is because calcium and the other vital nutrients that milk provides are essential for bone and tooth development in particular, and good health in general. If your baby no longer enjoys milk as a drink, try offering milky desserts, such as rice pudding or custards, or cheesy sauces with pasta. A little pot of yoghurt once a day is also an excellent standby. Don't forget, too, that mashed sardines or pilchards (with the bones) are an excellent source of calcium and iron, as well as being a good source of omega 3 essential fatty acids, so even if it is not your favourite, see what your baby makes of fingers of toast with a sardine dip.

A formula fed baby needs 26-32 oz a day. This is what I have read and what the Ped has told me. The first year (after 4-6 months) is only an introduction to solid foods they still need the majority of their nutrients from breastmilk/formula. I offer my daughter 32 oz. a day and sometimes she'll finish every bottle ans sometimes she won't. If you are interested this is her schedule.

6-7 a.m. she wakes up and has 8 oz
8 a.m. (2 hours after she wakes up) breakfast and 4 oz.
12:00 lunch and 4 oz
2-3 p.m. (when she wakes up from afternoon nap) 6 oz and a light snack
5:30 p.m. dinner and 4 oz
7:00 bedtime and 6 oz

My suggestion is to feed less solids so that your baby will drink more formula.

Hope that helps!

I asked this same question to my health visitor (my daughter is 10 months) and she said they should have a pint of milk (formula)a day but she said thats not considering the other dairy your baby gets in the day.

My baby has 1 or a most 2 9oz bottles a day but she eats really well. If your baby has gne off milk then just give him cheese, petit filous, dailylea sandwiches ect, that will alltop up his dairy intake. You could also use formula in his cereal if you are really worried he is not getting enough but as long as he is putting on weight he should be fine.

If in doubt - talk to your health visitor.

It depends on your baby's weight and how much he eats/drinks of other things. If he won't drink milk or water, give him baby rice maybe mixed with milk. That's a good way of getting them to have it. And to make sure he drinks enough, it's ok to put a tiny drop of cordial in water. You can get the actual baby ones but, to be honest, the baby ones are far sweeter than normal ones.

It varies too much for anyone to give you a definiate answer. Each babys' needs are different.

He should be starting to drink other juices & water now. Water is obviously far better for him, but you can be diluted juices. He is still going to need milk though as well.

My kids went from drinking nearly 2 pints a day to hardly a glass each a day - it's not enough. I get them to have milk shakes to ensure they are getting some though.

I imagine your baby is eating a lot of other food at 9 months. One of my children went off milk quite early. I just made sure I gave him calcium in other ways. My son liked yoghurt's so gave him them instead of milk.
I would try and get him to drink water and if he refuses water there is the water with a hint of fruit in.

Hope this helps. :-)

Mine has 6 oz bottles about 4 times a day.
Once they start to eat more solids they don't need as mush milk but if your concerned and want him to have more milk, cut down on his solids, give him smaller meals.
Don't stress out too much about the water, my 1st wouldn't drink it til she was about 1. Just keep on offering him it, if he's thirsty he will drink. the joys of parenting eh?
Good luck!
P.s If you have to give him juice, whatever you do don't give it in a bottle or a magic cup (one that doesn't leak). Give it in a normal baby cup that leaks so he doesn't have to suck on it.It's so bad for their little teeth..trust me, it's not nice seeing your kid having teeth out.

A 9 month old should be on breastmilk or formula. No regular cows milk.
