The "surrounded by water" is not the exclusive definition, only the most simplistic form of the definition.

For example, North and South America are generally considered continents, even though they are connected by a strip of land and thus neither is separately surrounded by water.

The more accurate definition of a continent is a sufficiently large landmass that is geographically distinct from any other landmass. That allows Africa to count as a separate continent, despite the narrow strips of land connecting it to the Middle East and despite the close proximity to Europe need the Straits of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean sea forms a sufficient division to make Africa distinct from Europe.

As for the distinction between Europe and Asia, that has been the subject of scholarly debate for centuries. From a geological standpoint, the Urals and Caspian Mountains and the Black Sea form a point of demarcation but not division between the two halfs of the continent. However, from a political perspective, the distinction between Europe and Asia has been around for at least a thousand years, so it's a bit difficult to get people to throw away that terminology.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the third-world designation, which is a completely different topic.

Whereas the word continent is a geographical term, third world country is more of a sociological reference. Since the European Union has been formed, Europe has become more of a tight-knit political force than in the past. Also with the current world war situation, alliances have been quickly formed and some broken.

For thousands of years, there have been issues which separated Europe and Asia. Some of these include natural resources, trade, and religion. Also the form of government is a big issue in the question of Western civilization versus Eastern. That is one of the reasons we are still fighting in the current war, government.

Once upon a time there where two big countries that held the power in the world, USA and And the mighty Soviets, Some countries where Aligned with USA others with Russia but there were many countries that were with none of them and were called not aligned countries or third world countries, like there were two worlds: Soviets and friends ans USA and friends and the rest of the world, those happened to be under developed countries. The soviets went down and the third world countries name stuck, the non aligned countries name disappeared

Mainland Europe was first to be called the Continent so as to distinguish it from England (offshore). Eventually, the term Continent could have evolved to include England too. Less developed nations are 3rd world because they were not part of the the first world (industrialized west) or the 2nd world (communist countries).

There are seven continents, Europe is one of them. There are virtually no people living in Antarctica, yet strangely it is still regarded as a continent. Perhaps checking the definition of continent again might be in order?

Nations are defined by artificial borders based on entities (states) exercising political control over them.

Europeans look very different from southern Asians. Third World Countries by any other name are nations with a poor economy and government.
