I live in Florida so here's what I know and how I see things.

The big three are FSU, UF, and Miami. FAMU, which is an HBCU, is probably the 4th.

Univeristy of Florida is huge. Florida State has a smaller but still on the larger side. Miami, FAMU, UCF, and USF are on the lower scale of medium-sized.

FSU, UF, FAMU, and UWF are all in smaller cities. Whereas Miami, Florida International, Barry, UCF, USF, and UNF are all in bigger cities (Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville).

FSU, FAMU, and UCF overall have the best atmospheres for minorities the best for minorities.

FSU, FAMU, and UF have the most active and involved student bodies and the most fun.

Barry and Lynn are private schools in South Florida and while they are still expensive do serve as an alternative to Miami. They're smaller, easier to get into, and their campus life is a bit more mellow which is possibly due to the lack of sports.

FAU and FIU are really easy to get into and mostly attended by locals from the immediate area. They have large continuing student populations. They aren't really considered good schools, and to those from the state of Florida they are usually last choice schools, but it's still 4-year college.

UNF is an okay school. Not the greatest but not the worst. Jacksonville is growing as a city, so you're in a nice location. If you like the beach then it's right nearby. It's not too far off from other cities such as Atlanta or Orlando (about 4 hours). It's medium-sized. The university is growing but it's campus life isn't as active as it could be. You can have a good time there but it does sometimes get dead.

Personally I think the best is Florida State.

Miami is a good school but way too expensive. There's no need to spend that kind of money on undergrad unless it's one of the true top schools in the country. UF is too big and the administration isn't known for being the greatest or the most open.

People may joke that FSU is just a party school but it's not just a party school.

There is a lot of fun to be had there. The students do party but there is more to it. Dorm life is great. The academics are good and the professors are great. The student body has a fairly good mix. There are lots of clubs and activities to be involved in on campus. It's not a large city but it still is a city so there is some stuff to be done around town. It's also only about an hour from Panama City and the beach, 2 hours from Jacksonville, and about 4 from Orlando and Atlanta.

Good luck with your college search and experience!

Florida State University - medium size school with all the hoopla of the big college scene.

(At UF you will be a # and UM is too much money for what you actually get)

If you want a second pick, look at University of Central Florida.

If you live in Florida, go to Miami Dade for two years...then transfer to FIU. You will save money and get a very well rounded education.
