Because when you're drinking from a straw, it's a continuous flow of liquid--you suck through the straw and it goes to your throat and you swallow it and sluuuuurp! All gone!

When you drink from the side of a glass, it's harder to take big gulps without choking or slopping liquid all over yourself. So you take smaller sips, swallowing between each. It's not continuous suction.

Because you can get the liquid further to the back of your mouth for swallowing faster.

I use a straw to drink water all the time when I'm trying to stay hydrated and trying to drink 8 glasses a day. It IS faster to drink liquids this way.'

You question is very interesting and has me thinking. I do not know the answer to this but I bet it has something to do with physics and such. This would be a great "science project" for school.
