I have an old robe with a tag written in maybe Japanese which I cannot read. The fabric sort of feels like silk, but then again it kind of doesn't.

The only way that I know involves a burn test. If there is a small piece of fabric somewhere on the robe that you can cut off; along the seams or maybe in the pocket. When lite silk will burn and not melt and it will also give off a sweet sugary smell. If it is not silk it is probably rayon and rayon will melt instead of become ash and will also not smell sweet.

Rub any glass item against it... If the glass item develops an electric charge and can lift pieces of paper off a desk, then you've got silk...!

rub it together really fast and then feel it. if it gets hot, it's not silk.
