cartoon were more known as adventurous and many taught a MORAL that had a meaning to focus on. many were meant for the soul purpose of a positive reinforcement of good verses evil. at least the cartoons in the early to mid 80's even animes from that time period. you have to look also at the time the anime or cartoon was made. yes anime is a cartoon, but some people separate the 2. some animes leave allot of cliff hangers that don't ways bring a happy ending. Ulysses 31 is a good example.

The United States seems to be accoustomed to different things, but the United States and Japan are becoming more and more accoustomed to each other's cartoons or anime. There would never be a cartoon here that has a perhaps sad or suspenseful ending like one might consider the video Fooly Cooly (Furi Kuri) to have had, or even Spirited Away.

Its just part of the american psyche. Ever story has to have "closure" and they want to feel happy, so every tale has to end with back slapping, etc.

This need for closure is taken to ridiculous extents. For instance When they invaded baghdad, remember how their thugs draped a US flag over the statue of Saddam Hussein( before it was quickly taken away). It was the same flag which was flying on the pentagon on Sept. 11th.

A very interesting question, therefore. The american need for "closure", (i.e., make real life the same as hollywood fantasies) is the cause of much anguish in the world.

Will there isn't going to be a happy ending for one cartoon character in a comic strip called for Better or For Worse some guys going to get his heart broken by a female character in that comic strip so American comic strips don't always have happy ending. Why do I say that because this girl has to choose between her old high school sweetheart and who is just newly seperated from his wife who he married because the girl dumped him, the guy when he was dating this girl in high school particually lives with her family, the guy is employed by a fellow who is friends with her brother. And some guy she is dating now who she is forcing to move to her hometown because she wants to be closer to her folks. Sounds complicated yes it does because this girl's love life is never easy. Once she was living with a guy and she caught him cheating on her with some other girl. So now you know why this comic strip might not have a happy ending.

Because they just want to cut to the chase and try to get in new episodes so if it's a happy ending at the end of the show, the creators can get in all new sorts of idas, rather than having it to be a long series based on one conflict like on Shaman King (my favorite TV Show that used to come on and its an Anime). Anybody in the cartoon who wanted to enroll (and is a shaman) could be in the Shaman Tournament to see who will become the next Shaman King. (Or ruler of all Shamans)

Cartoon and Anime are different things. American cartoons are mainly targeted towards kids and it would definitely be nicer to have a smiling kid then a crying one.

Japanese Anime is not necessarily just for children, in fact some of them are specifically targeted towards adults, like Hentai.

First, Satu's right. Fullmetal Alchemist is awesome, but has quite a sad ending.

I think the happy ending thing is partly for closure, and because most cartoons are aimed at kids, and who wants a little kid to see anything depressing?

Japanese aneme is the best, Americans are too soft in their designs but their comics are still pretty good, so no offence to you Americans. It's just part of the designers ideas, and maybe they think that happy endings are what story telling all about. It also depends on what type of comic you've been reading.

It's all about the Cult of the Individual. The hero who sets out to save the world by himself must succeed in his venture. It's a subtle piece of evidence on the total dominance of the power of the individual within American culture.
