It sounds like an interesting idea. You should go for it if that is your passion. I highly suggest including items from the Robotech series, especially the Macross saga.
One thing that you should plan to do if you haven't already is contact the various manufacturers for information that might not be common knowledge but not classified either. You might be able to get a hold of props and film samples, possibly with just the mere acknowledgment of their donation. It's worth a shot.
One final suggestion that would go beyond what you find on Answers is to get in touch with some museums on specific topics. I'm thinking off the Superman museum in Metropolis, Illinois, as an example. Maybe get in touch with the town of Vulcan, Alberta, where a lot of Star Trek props were donated by Paramount.
