When I went in to connect the light, there were three wires, a black, white and a blue wire. I connected the blue and the black wires together and then connected those to the black lead wire from the light and obviously the white wire with the white wire. I can no longer use the light switch for this, the light I just installed remains on and cannot be shut off unless I turn it off at the breaker.

You are a danger. The blue is coonected to the switched leg and needs to be fed from the switched side of the wall switch, if there is a red wire buried in the ceiling box that may be the switched leg, if only a black in the ceiling box then that is the switched leg and the constant hots are buried in the ceiling box, the black is constant hot, and the white is neutral. The fan motor should be hooked to the constant hot so you can run the fan with the room light off. Open the switch box, are there 2 or 4 wires (two wirenutted)? If so the black from this box is switched. If there are 3 wires than the red is switched. If there are two wires only, the returning black is the switched leg and you should see a black and white wire connected together in the back of the ceiling box. If you need more of an explaination you should not be doing the job. Hire an electrician or at least a handyman. Mr. jim and I are the only correct answers.

Ok there should be two wires black 110 v AC white common that is where your power is coming from and there should be two more wires one is probably the blue one. There should be one more look for it the black you should hook up with the blue or the other wire that is missing one of the two but the one that is left over from the three should be ran to the black on the light and the white to white,if you can not find the other wire that should be coming in with the blue you need to two new wires to the light switch to be ran and discard the blue. PS I hope that this helps.if you have special switch for a ceiling fan then you need to get regular light switch. To be on the safe side run two new wires from light box on ceiling to light switch box on the wall .

YOu separated the wires in the ceiling , you have tied the light to the main power from the panel.
in that box you will have power coming in blk and white
you will have pweor going some where else blk and white
you will have a switch with blk and white
and maybe pwoer to plugs black and white'

you have to identify the switch leg to the wall sw.
and the power coming to the box
Ok power from the panel tied to the white wire from switchthe white takes power down thur the switch and returns to the ceiling on the black wire, that is a single wire by it self wite nut it and put to the side.
all the other blks wire to the blk from panel controled by c/b
all the white go to gether WITH THIS exception the whtie form the switch leg to the wall switch it should be twisted to the panel blk ,with one white for the fixture . now the black from the wall switch and the single white go to the fan light or what ever fixture
be careful be careful be careful

You will need two switch legs (hot wires) if you switch the fan separate from the light. One will go to the black and one to the blue, and the white goes to the white.

Now you should be able to switch the fan, and or light, on and off, by pull chains like it is now. I do not see how the switch is not working, I would suspect that you have a separate problem with the switch.

Use only the black and white wires. The blue wire is to control a ceiling fan.
