I have been running for many years now. I started running and continue to do so for myself. I usually do around 5 miles and have gone up to 13. I am 27 and in great shape. I feel that running a marathon will give me a sense of achievement to treasure for the rest of my days. However, I am 6'3 200 lbs. and I'm not going to lie to you, even with great shoes I get very sore in the joints of my legs after running anywhere over 5 miles. Marathons are very, very stressfull on the body and I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons. I don't know what 26+ miles would do to my body, any suggestions wise people of Yahoo!Answers?... (I am fully aware of the training regime involved with a marathon, I'm just looking for experiences and opinions)

If you are at all capable of it, then go for it. I ran my first marathon in 2005, and it was a struggle, but it is an accomplishment that I am immensely proud of. You may be able to find a sport medicine doctor that can help you isolate the cause of the pain you experience. There may be a way to prevent it or minimize it. Try a shorter endurance race such as a 15k or a half-marathon to get some experience with long races. You can experiment with race strategies and recovery experiences during and after these races.

certain, 3 finished marathons and six 1/2 marathons thus far. i began operating even as i became 40-5 years old. I Googled my call very last 12 months and placed a guy with My call who ran the London Marathon one month earlier I ran the San Francisco Marathon. How do you want that.

I ran one a few years ago. I am 5'11' and weighed about 195 at the time. I chose a difficult one. Get good shoes, wear them a little before the race, and try to find a course that isn't on pavement, or you can run on the side of the road in some places. I am glad I ran the one I did, and I may run another some day.

Start small with some local community runs or charity events. I am a firm believer in mind over body. I am just an average mom of two in my mid 30's and took up cycling a few years ago. I decided to do a 150 bike race. I started small with some community fun rides and then took on the challenge (I did it!). You can do anything you put your mind to. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it. Check with your local YMCA and see if they can hook you up with any events. If you start going you will meet people just like you who are also interested in improving.

Always go for it. It's been told to me that after you hit the ten mile mark consitently your body will be more open to running longer. You can do it. The training is hard, and the reward is worth it. I'm impressed that you had the foresight to think about your joints, something many people your age do not.

I've never done that, but i'd respect you if you pulled it off. You've already gone halfway (13 miles), so go for it!

As for the feet, have you been to a sports orthopedics shoe store? I can't remember where it was, but my ex had similar problems until she got specialized shoes........much more comfortable since.

i have only been running sice i was in 6th grade and i am in 8th now and i am able to do a marathon .so if i can do it a 27 year old man who has been running for a coupls of years can do it .
all you need to focus on is training:]

i would train then try like 15 mile if u feel good enught o do 26= then ahead if u almost pasted out no

first you see a doctor, to check health condition after that run for the goal.
