I wasn't homeschooled, but I've known and spoke to others who have.
One of the main reasons I encountered for homeschooling was to improve the quality of education. The parents felt that they best knew their child's abilities, and could could mold their education to exactly meet their child's interests and talents. Not only were the parents better able to meet the needs of their child, they also felt their child would learn more if his teacher didn't have to divide time among several other students. In other words, it is argued that an exceptionally bright child who is homeschooled won't be held behind by slower students and will have more individually-tailored lessons than students in larger, traditional school classes.
Other reasons for homeschooling I have heard are:
-To spend more time with your kids
-To instill the values of the parents and protect the child from outside influences
-To promote individuality and initiative in the student
- To keep the kids out of more dangerous schools in the area

Some people prefer home schooling for many reasons. The first and foremost reason is that people want to shield their children from outside influences, bullies and other abuses. There are teachers who will not spend the time on only one child for too long. I've had a teacher tell me this. If the child didn't get it the first time, this woman told me she refuses to hold back the other students.
For some parents, it is important for their children to have an art education. By this, I don't mean tracing your open hand to make a mock turkey drawing. There are people who want their children to go into museums and they want their children to have a thorough art history education. They want them to know how to draw what they see and be able to create art that is worthy of hanging alongside a master work.
Some people think athletics aren't up to par in some schools.
And then, there may a child who is "slow" or suffers some other disability.
For all the people I've known who home schooled, their main concern seemed to be that they understood how impressionable young children are. They waited until their children were more mature before they allowed them to enter into a school.

Many times parents feel that their child will get a better education at home. This is especially true if the child has special needs or learning disabilites. A lot of schools just cannot provide the facilites, and the services that some kids need, the system is seroiously over taxed and underfunded. As a high school teacher, I've noticed over the years that socaially high school can be a very dangerous place and many parents don't want their kids exposed to alot of what goes on there.

There are many reasons, some are religious, some are health, some people believe teachers can't do as good as a parent can. Some teachers don't have time. I'm not slamming teachers, I know money is tight. But, some parents want their kids to have the best possible start in life and they believe that home schooling is the answer. Also, many places allow home-schooled kids access to after school programs so they do get socialization with their peers.

Well, I know a "twisted" woman that is AFRAID her children will grow up and KNOW other people besides her and her husband, get married and leave them. So, in order to control their lives more fully, she home schools them. Three of her children have gotten married anyways and she absolutely hates their spouses, even tho they ARE beautiful people and very kind hearted.
I'm not saying she didn't do a wonderful job teaching them knowledge, she did. She just did it for the wrong reason. And she still has 3 in "home school" at home, I just hope they turn out as well adjusted as their older siblings.

we can get up @ 10 or when ever we feel like it... and eat when we feel like it.... I've been home schooled for the past 9 years.... now I'm going to public school as a sophomore...... I can't say it was a bad idea.... but my children will go to public because (this is just partly how my parents are not cuz I was home schooled) I wasn't in very many extra-co programs.... I was still involved in my youth group so I made a bunch of friend and I had a good social life... but I was never in sports and I really wish I were
It has it's pros and cons
PS Paris.... I'm so much smarter than most ther kids I know in public school.... so get a life!!

Because they are able to control what the children are exposed too. I would not want my child indoctrinated by a teacher to his or her personal opinions. Teacher are an authority figure and have a captive audience and do not as a rule allow decent. If the child disagrees with them they will in many cases receive negative feed back as well as a lower grade.

many people choose home schooling because they feel that 1) the public schools in their area are sub-par and that their child can get a more rigorous education from home, or 2) that the public schools are not compatible with the values system that they would like to inculcate in their children.
while home schooled children have a reputation for being poorly socialized, many communities are forming associations of home schooling parents who arrange socialization activities for their children.

Homeschooling is GREAT. I was homeschooled my whole life. Most people think that when you are homeschooled, you have no friends. That is not true. You have alot of friends. What I liked about it was we went on vacation and saw so many things. We still did school and we never got it easy because we were. I believe that with the way schools are getting now, it is better to be homeschooled.

Easier to breastfeed a 7 year old this way. Bringing the boobage to his 2nd grade class may be socially damaging for the little guy.
BTW, this is NOT a personal experience, just second hand.
