Split is a very beautiful city, you will love it there!
You have no worries about finding a place to stay. Hotels can be rather expensive, but you are going basically after tourist season, so you should be able to find a decent priced hotel. The best bet for you would probably be to get a private apartment or room. You can easily haggle a good price, especially in September when the tourists are more scarce.
Things to see. Definately take a drive to Sibenik, Trogir, and the outlying cities. Very very beautiful. Also, you can get many boats to the islands. Croatia is the land of 1000 islands, and you definately have to go there! Also, the Dalmatian's are renowned for their seafood. Try to find an authentic restaurant, if you love seafood, you'll be in heaven! I would even recommend, now that the Autoput (highway) is built, to take a drive to the Plitvicka Jezera. This is one of the most beautiful spectacles to behold. Just do a google on it. I would also try to get to Dubrovnik, atleast for a day trip, although it is a good distance from Split. Believe me, there is alot of things to do!
What I did when I went, was take a plane to Zagreb, then I rented a car there and drove down to Split. However, you can easily get a cheap flight to Split from Zagreb (the capital).
Enjoy your trip. You will be amazed at how beautiful the Dalmatian coast is. Just beware of the water porcupines in the Adriatic, they hurt if you step on them :)

usually i recommend dubrovnik, but this time iÌÎll make an exception. IÎd suggest you find a place to stay in split. Split has a beautiful old centre, the Bacvica beach, the hill Marjan and of course nice cafes and restaurants. from there you can make short trips to Omis, Makarska, Trogir, Sibenik or Zadar. A couple of places i suggest:
Omis, a small beautiful town close to split and well connected with split. there is a possibility of sightseeing, eating in good restaurants and of course swimming. If you ask for Duce, you can enjoy one the few sandy beaches in the South of Croatia.
Another option are the islands of Hvar and Brac. Hvar is especially expensive because it is very in.
If you go 25 km north of Splt youÎll find the town of Trogir. IMO, the third prettiest town in Croatia and protected by the UNESCO.
I recommend a visit to the Krka waterfalls, one of ten national parks in Cro.
Depending on your holiday budget rent a car which makes life much more easier. In case of questions email me.

The most prominent feature of Croatia's tourist industry is its Dalmatian coastline, which is indented with rocky cliffs, peninsulas and small inlets. Numerous good quality hotels and marinas have been resurrected or constructed in the past few years, and the Croatian province is once again beginning to enjoy a tourist boom reminiscent of its heyday in the 1930s. There is a special atmosphere to Croatian towns and villages, many of which are built on the sites of ancient Greek settlements dating from the 4th century BC. ENJOY!!!!

Big warning: My friend's family just went to Dubrovnik last weekend with no hotel and no plans and were laughed at when they tried to find places to stay. Eventually, they were put up in a wet basement and ended up heading home the next morning (we live in Sarajevo).
If you run into trouble, try making a run for the boarder...the BiH boarder that is! If you get the chance to check out Mostar, it will be well worth the trip.
Best wishes!

i recommend the tour of Split, Dubrovnik, some islands ( Mljet- it's also a national park, Hvar or Brac....Hiking on islands is also possible and the view is unbeatable!
warning: Dubrovnik is expensive, so if you go there by car expect to pay at least 25 Euros for parking!
