I attend NYU now and yes it is very difficult to get into. Most people I know scored a 1400+ on the old SAT. I've met a good number of kids whom were admitted to Harvard and came to NYU instead. Most have a 4.0 from high school. Depending on what you score on your SAT, you could maybe get in. You'll never know unless you apply.
I received a 1510 on the old SAT four years ago out of 1600. I had a 4.0 in high school and graduated top of my class. I hope this helps and good luck!

that particular GPA will most likely be sufficient - it depends on how NYU weights 1) the academic rigor of your school, and 2) the classes you have taken, versus 3) the grades you received.
but you should probably back it up with a really good SAT score. you should concentrate on that next.
after you have your statistics lined up, then you can concentrate on showing off your community service and your essay-writing ability.

It IS very difficult to get into. Just make sure you get at least a decent SAT score and you'll have a chance for getting it. Here's the stats:
Average SAT Verbal Score- 652
Average SAT Math Score- 658
Average ACT Composite- 29
Average HS GPA- 3.65
% graduated in top 10% of class- 63
% graduated in top 25% of class- 92
% graduated in top 50% of class- 99

Its the most applied college in the nation, so yes it is. It's a good school though and you should try to get in. Your GPA could be a little higher, so a good SAT score in the 2100/2200+ range would probably get you in, as it sounds like you come from a prestigious school and are well rounded.
EDIT: actually looking at the stats above you should get in.

Best thing for you to do is meet with a student counselor at NYU. They can tell you better than any of us on Yahoo! Answers can.
Best of luck!

Probably may have to take the SAT, although you're creditials aren't bad.
NYU is difficult and expensive, but there is also Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Yale, even CCNY, which is a good school.
If NYU won't take you, try UCLA or Stanford, both are respected!
