If you've been using it for 5 years with the same motor I would say its worth it.

I used to blend motor oils.

I tell you from a position of knowledge - the synthetic is more hype than what it delivers.

First they want you to use a particular lube to coat the inside (like a silicone or a teflon - run for 3000 miles) and then to continue to use synthetic. The brand is called Slick.

This is because, engines run at a high compression ratio and run lot hotter. But efficient cooling and better combustion have kept these running at optimum.

When Oil prices were going up from $4 a barrel to $11 a barrel in early 1970s, it made some sense because motor oil was getting way expensive. (from 0.89 cents to $1.15 a quart).

At $70 a barrel today, motor oil prices have not gone up that much. I would say using synthetic at high prices is just a waste of money. It was $1.50 a quart. Today you can buy for $2. That is not going to break my bank. Should it not be selling at $10.50 a quart at these oil prices/bbl? Not so.

Remember days when some people will buy gas only from Exxon or from some particular name brand? It is the same thing. Today you buy gas from whoever that sells cheap - even by 3c a gallon. Name brands are there but gas burns the same way in your engine whether you buy from a ma and pa shop or from the big name guys. Ma and pa buy them from big guys anyway to begin with. They make less profit to stay competitive.

Synthetic oil is the same way. Stay with regular motor oil. You will do just fine. Change it every 4 or 5,000 miles.

It depends on your driving habits. If you've been using it for years now, why go back? Smaller engines do work harder and using synthetic oil will help prolong the life of the engine. Even if you do use synthetic oil you should still change the oil at no more than every 6000 miles. Again, it depends on the car and your driving habits. If you tend to sit at idle in traffic for long periods of time you should change your oil more frequently. Think of it as an investment. Like the old fram commercials used to say "you can pay now or pay me later."

check the heat range of your motor see if its cooler friction is heat. synthetic oil coats surfaces to reduce friction. but that does not mean change it once dirt is the problem . Oil is abrasive look at the pipe line problem but that's crud. Did you ever see graphite? see how it sticks to you finger that's what synthetic oil does.Look at what oils they use in races cars and air planes then you decide whats b/s or not

I 've read that fake oil eventually wears out the seals, rings and eventually the build up from synthetic is irremovable.. But propaganda runs rampant these days so do the research and judge it for yourself. I know that's why you are posing the question. My advice ask click and clack, they are most helpful....

If your asking if you can use less expensive regular oil. Yes. It won't hurt your engine. But I wouldn't. I like Mobile oil.
