England. In terms of progress England was first and foremost in the dark ages known for their culture (first country to use forks or anything besides their fingers to eat with) except for Asia (chopsticks) They were the first in the Industrial Revolution, encouraging new ideas and mechanisms. Mass production (don't confuse with assembly line, that was Ford) began in England, as well as in 1689 the English produced a steam engine t o mine coal with, and later a new way to smelt and purify iron (hence the iron age) . They were responsible (John Key) for an invention that spun fiber, a modernized spinning wheel and revolutionized the textile industry. They led in all the fine arts, theater, dance, and plays. Open minded and encouraging was Queen Victoria whose reign saw smaller and smaller amounts of squaller and more people living in middle class housing. Navigation was perfected in England as well, and don't forget Sir Isaac Newton (gravity).

I do not think there is one such country. The Babylonians, the Greeks, the Moors, and all in between till today. Without the addition of knowledge from each civilization, we would not be where we are today. Ha! Do know know if where we are is bad or good? I sometimes wonder.

India - despite their lack of any financial benefit they have essentially been behind the grindstone.
They invented the concept of zero without which population and size would be unquantifiable and thus non existent....
