Mx-5 (Miatas) were fitted with with a 1.6 L 2x overhead cam inline 4-cylinder engine (120 hp) these were the B6 series engines also used in 323 or the 1.8...both 4 cyc.
They kept the same engine line up throughout the incarnation. There were rumors that Mazda was going to do a rotary for the Mx-5 but it was just hype for the upcoming release of the Rx8.
The newer miatas have the 1.8 or 2.0 NA or Turbocharged.
Rotary...Wankels...will pretty much stick with the RX line of cars.
However, customwise...you can always do one yourself.
Im putting a 13b-rew into my Mazda Mx-3.

Its not a rotary engine.
Mazda tend to use the "RX" tag on all rotary models (although there were some Japan-market rotary-engined "Cosmo" models during the 1980s), so the 1970s RX-3, the various incarnations of the RX-7 and the RX-8 were/are rotary powered.
The MX-5 has a four-cylinder 16v dohc engine, mounted longitudinally.
Originally a 1.6-litre, a 1.8-litre was added later, and the latest model is available with a 2.0-litre engine.

The older MX 5s had either a 1.6 or a 1.8 twin OHcam engine.
The new one has either a 1.8 or a 2.0 OH cam engine. The rotary (wankel) engine was fitted to some rx7's and the rx8.

Nope! always been Wankel engines! Mazda where the only car makers to stick with the Wankel and develope it as the rest deemed it to be to unreliable-mostly due to the fins/teeth wearing away or snapping off!

Yes. It's rotary as in Wankel.
Now, admit it. You just wanted an excuse to use the word "Wankel" on a public forum, didn't you? :)
