It seems like most people want to just say "it means 'bad luck'"... but it can also be about perception. Picture this...

A Black cat was walking while a human was crossing her path. The human was blocking the path of the black cat and the cat got pissed off and scratched the human here and there and down there as well. Either way, the human got screwed badly.

There is a song on Russian about a black cat crossing the path in which the words go like this:

"...They say if a black cat crosses the path you're out of luck.
But meanwhile it's just the cat that is out of luck..." --by Valerie Sutkin.

Hope I helped!

Basically it is all in your mind.
So after the black cat crosses your path and you go through the way and if that does not bother you, then you will do all your things properly and there is no problem.
If you feel uncomfirtable and that is nagging your mind, you are not doing whatever you are supposed to do with your complete mind and interest. This may lead to some errors- which you will blame on the poor black cat.
So Train your Mind and do mind control and not everything bothers you.

Put food in my dish NOW, but that's only the friend's cat I am watching. What does it mean when a black cat crosses your path?

Sperstition to the MAX! I think stuff like that happens an people back then thought that stuff like that was an oman and bad stuff would happen. Theres a time an place for every thing. Maybe that cat has a mouse to catch as well as you got a taxi to catch. You just crossed paths an it don mean NADDA!

I wouldn't know. Black cats for some reason go out of their way to keep me from crossing their path!

It means that the cat wanted to get someplace and you just happened to be there. That is superstition and it requires that you believe it, before anything bad can happen to you. Face it! Every day we are faced with decisions, that may turn out good or bad. Forget about superstition, but it is not a good Idea to walk under a ladder. You may get hit over the head with a bucket of paint. Don't jump off of a bridge either. In other words, don't place youself in jeapardy, over a superstition.

it does not always mean bad luck. in some countries it means good luck and in some regions your luck depends on from what side the cat crossed your path
