I've been using ignore and report as spam for several months now, but it doesn't have any effect. He messages me every single day several times. Why doesn't appear off-line and ignore always work on Yahoo?

Just in case it wasn't clear in my original question, I have been using the 'Block/Ignore' button and report as Spam for over 2 months now, and the sender name is always exactly the same.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and suggestions. I'll leave it open to decide which is the best answer, because I see several really good ones. I don't think it's the 40 year old divorcee thing though, because this person isn't someone I met on yahoo answers and yes, at one time he was on my friends list. I took him off months ago and put him on block/ignore, and reported him to Yahoo and it still happens every single day. I haven't responded for over 2 months now and still they keep coming. I would post his name here so he could get some of his own medicine, but I might get in trouble and thats just not the way I am. Just so the women know though if anyone with an ID that starts with 'cute_sweet_guy' messages you, be prepared ;)

1. See if you can get this person's IP address. Put that information into ARIN so you can report the abuse to the IP (who should, in turn, dump them from service)
2. report the stalking as abuse to yahoo (abuse@yahoo.com) - please give as many details and examples as possible so their people can confirm the problem
3. If you feel threatened in any way - report the stalking to the FBI who has a special department for internet issues.
4. consider changing your handle and only letting people know that you trust about the change.

You may need to kill the account and make a new one. As much as I like my account and all, it isn't worth getting on some jerk's hit list. You might not want to advertise you're a 40 year old divorcee, either; that attracts losers. If you said your husband worked for the FBI, you might not be worth stalking to the average moron who does that kind of thing.
Best of luck; I have known one other woman who got too much attention from someone at work and it can be frustrating.
You know if he ever makes a threat, the Police can find him.

He probably has a program that allows him to bypass Yahoo ignore. Just delete his messages and IM's. I have had a similar thing happen. Report him to Yahoo in an e-mail and if all else fails, change your name. It sucks, but unless he poses a real and clear threat to your safety, the authurities will not get involved.

I've also noticed that the "/block" feature doesn't always work. Keep reporting him to yahoo, don't respond to him and keep attempting to block him. Having a message history to give to yahoo might help too.

That isnt as easy as it sounds. I had one, and I put him on "Ignore" repeatedly, but everytime I opened my Messenger, there he was. The only thing I can suggest is that you try doing what I did: I just deleted the s/n I used when I met him and started a new one.
Good luck. It's not just annoying, it's kinda freaky to have someone who just won't leave you alone.

I had the same thing happen for a couple of days.I put him on my ignore list. You just can't put ignore when your in the chatroom.I don't know why yours don't appear offline for you.Never respond to his messages and eventually he will stop. You said it's been months and that's crazy.I feel for ya.Was he ever list of friends?Deleting his name from the list should've worked.

Set your yahoo messenger so that only the people YOU want to see you see that you are on. Set it to "invisible to everyone" and then using the stealth settings you can choose which of the users you know who CAN see you.
Then it won't look like you are on. Also, add this person to yuor BLOCKED list on messenger, NOT just clicking ignore. YOu have to BLOCK messages from them.

People can still send you messages even when you appear offline. Sounds like he is using different email addresses to set up Yahoo accounts.
