Ok - I want to spend around $800 on a laptop. I will be using it to surf the web, send e-mail, do basic work with Microsoft Office and listen to music. I'm looking for something with an 80 gig hard drive and 512 MB of memory. I know next to nothing about computers. I've heard Dell customer support is a nightmare. All of the local electronics stores (Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City) have computers in this range but most people online seem to agree that there are better deals on the web. Any ideas?

Have posted this answer to a similar question but feel it bears repeating....Walmart of all places has some budget laptops @ great prices. Many are under 700.00.....got an IC Power for my now ex g-friend for Xmas last year and although it'll never be considered a powerhouse, it works trouble free, is light, has a small form factor, and GREAT battery life! Playing Morrowind, she could play a bit over 2 hours before recharging meaning that just normal use she could get between 2.5 and 3 hours between full recharges. If you are not near one, check out www.walmart.com

I've had really good luck purchasing from Tiger Direct. They have rebates - you have to be careful to meet all conditions for them, but the value is pretty good.
