Anyone who wants a snake for a pet has to be sadistic. Providing small live animals, and watching a snake catch and eat them is not something a normal person would enjoy.

We have a corn snake and a ball python that were unwanted by their former owners. They are sweet, gentle, and really seem to like us (dare I say love)
We feed them thawed frozen mice and rats. I love these animals, too, but let's face it, snakes are built to eat them and they are meant to be food (they're way down on the food chain and if they weren't preyed upon they would take over the planet).
Watching the snakes eat is not sadistic in the least- it is almost a spiritual experience. The beauty of the way a snake "transforms" itself to take in it's food and the grace with which it undulates to work it down to its digestive area , is absolutely astounding.
Too many people have the wrong idea about snakes. They are amazing beautiful misunderstood creatures and that's why I feel its a good idea for responsible, caring people to keep them and share them with others.
Thanks for the opportunity to share my views.

Well it probably depends upon what type of "pet snake" he wants? I mean our oldest has 7 pet snakes, but they're all nonvenomous, not poisonous. So what kind is he talking about? I would discuss your options or what his thoughts are. I mean, cornsnakes, hognoses snakes, ball pythons, and boas, all good. I have learned alot about snakes and reptiles from our oldest now. He educated us, so maybe your boyfriend could do the same, and even go to the store and see what they're like or if you're going to buy from a breeder, visit them if you can. So go to kingsnake.com, and look at some incredible stuff!!!! Good luck!

Yes, I've done it for years. Snakes can be easily trained to accept frozen/thawed food so you don't have to bother with live mice (as so many people here seem to be freaking out over). They're quiet (except for when they rearrange their cage) and relatively easy to care for so long as you follow the rules - fresh water every day or so, proper levels of light & heat on one side with a gradient to cool & dark on the other, hiding places, secure cage, don't over-handle, and more. Properly cared for snakes make excellent pets.

For you people that think people who keep snakes as pets are sadistic: MOST OF US ARE NOT SADISTIC, AND FOR YOUR INFO I DON'T WATCH MY SNAKE EAT I GIVE HIM HIS FROZEN/THAWED MOUSE AND LEAVE THE ROOM!

ok that said, yes you can live with a snake and if you get the right enclosure you won't have to worry to much about the snake escaping, and if its your boyfriends pet you won't have to worry about feeding it, he can do that. Also snakes make good pets, they arn't annoying like cats or dogs cuz they don't make noise and they don't smell if you take care of them properly. Just remember to do some research before you go out and buy a snake and I suggest something smallish.Good luck!

By the way Mrs. Potts, when you were a child your mother or father provided you with food to eat, were they also sadistic? think about what you're saying before you say it because snake owners are just providing food to our pets, and if you really think about it I feed my snake a frozen/thawed(already dead when i buy it at the store) mouse once a week, if your not a vegetarian you probably eat either a dead chicken, cow, or pig once a day.

Snakes normally don't bother people. Even if they escape from their habitats, they usually just find someplace to hide, and then show up again months later. Unless it's a venomous snake, or a really, really huge snake, they aren't dangerous in the least.

Yes ... if you don't mind feeding the thing 'live' mice and other small animals and if you don't mind having the danger of the thing getting out and harming or killing an infant. Large snakes like constrictors have been know to smother infants and bites can be nasty to a small child. My advice ... get a dog. A samll one ... and train it well.
