Just because I don't make enough money, I can't afford to go to college. Is this more evidence that the government wants to keep poor people from getting out of poverty?

Hey there are programs from the government that gives you financial aid. Check out http://www.finaid.org/ or http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp They offer financial aid to those who are less fortunate. Colleges don't discriminate if you are poor or wealthy. That's against the law.

Private colleges are allowed to discriminate all they want.

Public colleges cannot discriminate on grounds of race, ethnicity, national origin, or gender. Some states also provide other protections, such as sexual orientation, marital status, etc.

But a college can require you to pay for its services, and if you can't afford to pay, refuse you entry. That's not discrimination, because they are not treating you any different than anyone else.

That being said, have you looked into scholarships, private and state grants, federal Pell grants, subsidized loans, private loans.... etc. There are many ways to get or borrow the money necessary to attend school. And state colleges often subsidize state residents, so that in-state tuition is fairly in expensive. Especially at community colleges.

There are options. Explore them. But put the effort in yourself before blaming the government for not helping you.

Bullsh*t.

The government bends over backwards to help people out of poverty. This does NOT mean simply handing them money.

I know one guy who went to community college while he was homeless. He earned not only a degree but a job at the same time.

Even closer to home, my sister got her BS for almost nothing because she spent one month every summer applying for scholarships.

If you don't qualify for scholarships maybe you just aren't smart enough to make it through college. Maybe you can work a fryer though.

disagree wtih coryagryph ..... private colleges cannot discriminate all they want .... they are under the same rules and regulations that state schools have to abide by for the most part .... the only way that they can discriminate is when admissions is close to the incoming class quota and would rather have an applicant that is more finacially stable than another so the college can get its money

It's true that colleges do discriminate - they discriminate against dumb people. If you really do want into a college, there's tons of scholarships just waiting to be snatched up.

Oh boo freaking hoo! If your poor and not white you can get all kinds of free money to go to school. If you can't get into college, its not because of lack of funding. Its because of a lack of intelligence!

Only if you're white. If you are white, it's okay to discriminate against you.
