I didn't personally take anyone as a slave, so I don't owe anyone an apology. Take it up with the people who did the actual slave trading and get the chip off your shoulder.

Besides the fact that the african slaves in question were generally taken prisoner by AFRICAN traders, then shipped to the caribbean and the united states to be sold(which means that in most cases the "racist americans" didnt "steal" anything),and the fact that everybody on this planet, from the average jackass black guy screaming racism to the pope himself,is a racist to some extent,we really don't owe africa anything.During that time period
(much the same as it is today),no matter how reprehensible it may sound, people were a commodity to be bought and sold, and that was the general sentiment around the world. So you can't honestly blame them for buying or owning slaves. It's like laughing at people in the 16th century for riding horses or walking because you can drive today.Basically,we don't owe africa a damn thing.

We don't owe any apology to Africa or blacks for that matter. Like the other answerers have said, it was also people from Africa selling their own people as slaves. You are not a slave now. It happened long ago. You can't hold Americans responsible now, when we haven't even done anything and I'm sick of people saying we have to pay now. I'm not going to say get over it, just embrace it and move on. And learn how to spell properly!

OK, I know we took slaves from Africa and it wasn't right. However, slavery started before we became a country and had three countries to blame: Portugal, Spain and England. If you're going to ask for an apology, then it should be the 4 or else none. But if I had bought a slave, I'd apologize to your people right now and pay you back. No harm feelings!

If there is no cut off point with regards to history - where will it all end up. South America and the Spanish. Half of Europe and the Mongols. Britain and Africa. Mexico and US. These are some of the vast number of problems that will be opened up. Slavery was a terrible thing, as was the Jews in Germany but at some stage a line must be drawn in the sand. That is not to say one must forget it ever happened. It is part of our history and cannot and should not be forgotten. However, the vast number of Americans have no relationship to those who used slaves but are relative newcomers from Europe. Try, although it is hard, to forgive.............(but not forget).................

The history book I had in school (that was a great child booster as well) told me that Africans enslaved Africans, and if you think apologies are in order, they should start writing their sorry letters first. Who do you think I should give food and money to? Black people? All the black people I know in my area have all the food they want. Or did you mean I should send food to Africa? I think the United States does, but I cannot help it if they have a crooked system and it never reaches the people who really need it. Gee, where did you get your information from?

My family and none of my ancestors, ever owned slaves, and I personally don't feel liable to any one for the actions my family were not a party to.
If you feel this is applicable to slaves in American ,what about people that have ancestors that were slaves to the Romans,or to the Egyptians,or the indentured people that were slaves to who ever provided money for their passage to the new world. After the war between the states each slave was given 40 acres and a mule to farm that land, that was reparations made by the government. So in reality the people that were truly enslaved have already received something to try to make up for that injustice. Was it enough ,no ,does it mean we are to keep reliving this dreadful time in our history ,no.We are not responsible for what actions this country took ,in the past. There is no one alive today that was a slave, and there were many people of different colors that helped end slavery. So my answer is no we as a nation do not owe reparations to descendants of slavery.
And remember Arabs were heavily into the slave trade,so by discarding what blacks call slave names and taking Arabic names you are taking the names of the very people that initiated slave trading in the new world.

I will not apologize , I never owned a slave nor did any of my ancestors.
When I meet a former slave, I will tell him I am sorry for the harm done him, but I did not do it and bear no responsibility.
Why doen't the African government help African citizens! I think if we help, the africans , It should be education health and trying to establish a better , helpful government for their citizens. ( since their government seemed to put them into that position , in the first place.
I sure know that the U.S. gives ancestors of slaves, all kinds of help and they can be whatever they want to be ( now). Lots of help out there for them. They just have to be willing to work for it, Not one person black or white , willl ever be handed enough money to live like a millionaire. If you don't want too work, you can live on welfare, but you will never raise to the heights that you can attain if you apply yourself

what year is this? why should america apologize for something that happened hundreds of years ago? I didn't do it, nor can I be held responsible for what happened then. I know, maybe america should stop sending aid to africa? don't be a jerk. oh, and america wasn't the only country that had slaves from africa, read a book sometime.

America has paid and continues to pay for the evils done by our forefathers. Daily examples include:
1. Civil Rights Acts
2. Affirmative Action Program which gives preferential treatment to African-Americans.
3. Welfare
4. Unemployment Payments
5. Government Provided Housing
6. Food Stamps
7. The United ***** College Fund. (Imagine if we had a United Caucasian College Fund? They would riot.)
8 Special Scholarships for minorities who score high on ACT and SAT exams.
9. Black Comedians making fun of Honkies, but White Commedians would be killed for making fun of blacks.
10. Governmental jobs give extra points in hiring for minority applicants.
11. Blacks calling themselves the N-word, but whites would be killed for using the N-word.
I could go on and on. If some African-Americans wish to live off the government, there are plenty of opportunities for them to do so. I respect and honor Blacks who have taken advantage of opportunities that rightfully have come their way. I also get tired of other Blacks who continue to claim that we have a racist society when they refuse to be contributors to our society.
But,,,,,,, when I say I despise lazy whites, its okay, but if I say I'm tired of lazy blacks then I'm called a racist.
With some people I know I can't win, but thanks for letting me put my 2 cents worth in.
