I believe it was patterned after the Harvard helmets. The coach of Harvard came and coached at Michigan and brought the design (with different colors) with him (in the 1920s)

It came from Princeton, not Harvard. Harvard Crimson would have no reason to have an animal claw on their helmets, but the Princeton Tigers would. It was either Yost or Crisler that brought the idea to Ann Arbor.
