I would just continue to do what you are doing. Volunteer at the shelters and help animals in need there. If you know of someone who is a dog breeder, maybe ask them to let you help when they have litters, so you can get experience with that side of things too.

A friend of ours is an entrepenurial homeschooler. Three years ago, he started a pet sitting business. He's built obstacle courses for his animal clients and has read everything there is to read on every breed. (He also earned thousands of dollars.) He has now just completed a dog grooming course, and at 16, is certified. His parents are buying a dog grooming business - he will be a part-time groomer now, but the goal will be for him to manage this business.
Are you old enough to volunteer at a zoo or animal preserve that might be nearby? Are you old enough to read and learn from biology/anatomy texts? You can find them in used bookstores, often. Or through freecycle in yahoo groups.
Apart from seeing where you could take yourself before you are old enough to 'work,' have you talked to vets? You should have some connections now - if not, do establish some and ask for an appt to meet with a vet. Even offer to pay for the office time.
Have you yet read All Things Bright and Beautiful? All Creatures Great and Small? More farm veterinarian than dog vet (much more), they're still wonderful book.

I would say you're on the right track. Also see if you can take a pet first-aid course. I don't know how old you are, but when I was 10, I started walking dogs in my neighborhood. That way you can make some extra money and get experience with dogs.

Since you're partial to dogs, I'd suggest you call around to your local dog grooming shops and see if they can use a good hand at bathing & brushing their clients' dogs. You'll get to interact with dogs of all kinds, sizes and personalities, and if you get good enough perhaps they'll even teach you how to groom them yourself! It's always nice to learn a new skill...and bathing/brushing dogs is definitely a skill you can use throughout your lifetime for your own dogs as well as those you treat and care for. Great dream -- be sure to study hard, don't give up, and have lots of fun!

STUDY!!!!!!! You will need to be accepted into a good 4 year college and then a vet school. You will have a lot of hard work ahead of you. Also, start saving money now or start looking into scholarships...vet school is very expensive. When you get older, start job shadowing and working for vets.
